The Industry Sustainability Group (ISG) was established in 2009. The Group was formed following consultation with IGD members on its need, a workshop to identify potential topics, and ratification by IGD’s Policy Issues Council (PIC).
Aim:
To enable the food and grocery sector to adapt to a more resource constrained world, through the development of insight and good practice on key sustainability issues.
Objectives:
- Keep a watching brief on sustainability issues relevant to food and grocery companies, through interaction with ISG members, government, NGOs and other relevant agencies within the UK and internationally
- Identify work programmes and deliver specific outputs which deliver public benefit through improving industry knowledge, experience and skills (e.g. good practice guidance; use of common terminology; communication etc)
Current Work Streams:
- Reviewing current methodology of carbon footprinting and approaches across the supply chain of communicating carbon embedded in products
- Mapping of and engagement with relevant water related initiatives in the UK and beyond, including identification of standards/protocols relevant to the food and grocery sector.
- Providing a practical guide for grocery companies to understand, assess and manage water related risks in their supply chains.

Water Sub Group, illustrating Best Practice
The group will provide a practical guide for grocery companies to understand, assess and manage water related risks, where appropriate Illustrate best practice. The guide will be disseminated through IGD’s web-site and other channels with the objective of helping food and grocery companies manage the risks water poses (e.g. direct water use in the supply chain, quality, quantity and flooding).
